May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s important to raise awareness about men’s mental health. As someone who has personally struggled with mental health issues, I want to share my story in the hopes of helping others.

For over a decade, I worked with therapists and doctors and tried a range of different mental health medications with little success. I was suicidal for 15+ years due to emotional and religious trauma from my childhood. It wasn’t until I took charge of my own mental health in deep and meaningful ways that I was able to find a path for mental health maintenance and balance that works for me using modalities like yoga, meditation, nutrition, exercise, and plant-based medicines.

Supporting Men’s Mental Health

Unfortunately, many men don’t seek help for their mental health struggles, and this is largely due to the stigma surrounding mental health. Men are often expected to be stoic and not show vulnerability, which can make it difficult to seek the help they need. However, it’s important for men to know that it’s okay to ask for help and that seeking help is a sign of strength.

One way to support men with mental health is by creating safe spaces for them to open up about their struggles. This is where peer support groups, like the one I run, Dudes Need Dudes, can be particularly helpful. By having a community of other men to share their experiences with, men can feel less alone and more empowered to take care of their mental health.

There are also a range of resources available for men’s mental health, including therapy, medication, and support groups. It’s important for men to know that there are options and that they can find the support they need to take care of their mental health.  Men’s mental health is an important issue that needs more attention. By sharing our stories, creating safe spaces for open dialogue, and seeking out resources, we can help break down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and create a brighter future for everyone.

If you know someone who is struggling, please reach out to them. If your friend is on your mind, let them know. “We’re all just walking each other home.”
